The title says it all… Test your typing speed!
I recommend doing it three times in a row and take the average speed. I seem to score between 120 and 130 words per minute.
How about you?

I got 132 wpm when I tried it the second time … the first time, I didn’t appreciate that you didn’t have to type the return (and spend a few seconds figuirng out how to get the ‘you have made a mistake’ off the bottom of the screen). Mind you, even with that hiccough, I still got 80 wpm the first time around 🙂
Pity that I don’t code as fast …
#2 by Bob Lee on July 11, 2006 - 6:34 pm
75. Not bad for a touch typist though. 😉
#3 by Keith Donald on July 11, 2006 - 9:45 pm
119.68 on one try 🙂
#4 by Muthu Ramadoss on July 11, 2006 - 10:05 pm
I thought of myself as a decent typist until this:
1st try: 0 error, 94.86 wpm
2nd try: 1 error, 83.69 wpm
3rd try: 2 error, 102.25 wpm
I think my time is lost by a few seconds between the mouse click on the text area, and actually starting to type.

hi there,
I got 85 wpm on 1st attempt — again touch typist.
I should be coding more, I guess 🙂

~105wpm.
Hmm. I blame the Macbook keyboard.
#8 by Jared on July 11, 2006 - 11:33 pm
Annoying…There should be 2 spaces after a full stop (period) 🙁 Was anyone else trained to do this as a typist?
#9 by Hilbert on July 12, 2006 - 12:18 am
I guess you need to be skilled in English, as a foreigner I need to read some of the non-daily used words at least twice. Thus my score of between 45 – 50 (and improving each time). So all above: you are doing at least twice as good!
#10 by Nicolas Delsaux on July 12, 2006 - 12:43 am
I fully agree with Hilbert. indeed, as a french, I got a decent 50 wpm on this test.
#11 by Jan Prill on July 12, 2006 - 2:17 am
I’m a quite strong typist in german and here I’m scoring only around 70. I think it’s because you’ve got touch patterns for the words you are writing most in your natural language…

I’m trying to learn how to touch type at the moment. Thanks for the link that’s a handy little site for getting an idea of where I’m at!
#13 by Erik C. Thauvin on July 12, 2006 - 3:56 am
~12 wpm with one hand, which is all I could spare at the time. 😉
#14 by masukomi on July 12, 2006 - 7:04 am
averaged about 80 using Dvorak layout. But i’m usually typing code not text so speed isn’t anything i actually work towards.
#15 by Lee Meador on July 12, 2006 - 8:07 am
The question could be: If you are hiring a developer, does it matter how fast he or she types?
#16 by Frank Bolander on July 12, 2006 - 9:03 am

#17 by Mike Bosch on July 12, 2006 - 9:22 am
I got 95 the first time since I was also putting two spaces in after a period. Yes, I was taught that way as well when I learned typing.
I got 121 and 126 the second and third times, respectively.
#18 by hans on July 12, 2006 - 9:31 am
The test is pretty easy.. I’m scoring about 20 to 30 WPM faster than what I get here: http://www.typingtest.com/
About 2 years ago, after typing on QWERTY keyboards for about 20 years I finally made the switch to Dvorak. The inherent inefficiency in QWERTRY has always annoyed me – I wish they would teach new computer users to use the more efficient Dvorak layout instead of continuing to propagate the nasty “standard”!
It took a while to get back up to my old QWERTY speed (around 70wmp as measured by typingtest.com). I’m not any faster now on Dvorak, but I’m a lot more efficient – meaning there’s less strain and finger movement. I think there’s a lot more potential to get faster if I practiced. With Dvorak it’s also a lot easier to type on a laptop when I’m holding it down on my lap (on a standard Dvorak layout – the left hand hardly moves, so it’s easier to hold down and balance the laptop).
Besides the real advantages, the geek factor of having a keyboard layout that almost no-one else can use earns me some bragging rights. :-p

I am a 4 finger typist (and bad at spelling).
57.25.
I am happy with that as its better then I had thought it would be. I do agree we should all learn to be touch typist but its a skill I have never been able to gain.
#20 by mediogre on July 13, 2006 - 10:42 am
What can I say, I tried hard about 10 times and I could not score more than 70 wmp. As we all know human potential is vastly underestimated… Behold! With this little greasemonkey script, my typing sky-rocketed up to 3000 wpm :). Dvorak, anyone?

Jared, you don’t use two spaces after a period on modern computers. They space appropriately automatically.

Moderate?
#23 by Anonymous Coward on July 29, 2006 - 7:29 pm
erf… had to take it 4 times as to not make the “mistake” of entering “enter” once done… Because this closes the result window on my setup (Linux / Firefox) and I can’t seem to get it back. Had a “perfect” speedy run, no mistake… Couldn’t see my speed: was so fast I hit “enter” while in berzerk mode 🙁
Besides that I made a run at 93.4 wpm (?) with 2 errors.
I can do 115 wpm on Gnu’s gtypist test (smaller sentences).
Annoying that counter says it starts “once you click”… because if I click I’m not ready to touch-type.
Oh yup, touch-typist here btw, on a goold ole IBM Model M keyboard.
click.
🙂
Cool site Cedric, thx

I am just curious Cedric how many fingers do you use
for typing ?
#28 by hank on August 29, 2006 - 7:10 pm
This was fun. I had to glance at the material more than once while transcribing it, and that says something, seeing as how I make my meager living typing conversations at a telerelay center. Best score out of 3 tries was 138-point-something. 🙂

#33 by Anonymous on January 3, 2007 - 6:19 pm
Honestly who sits around wondering how fast they can type. All of you really need to get a life and start thinking about your real future. Instead of just sitting at a computer wondering how fast you can type. You’re not Bill Gates and most of you never will even be close. Get over yourselves, get a real job and then maybe think of getting some friends. Or perhaps a hobbie to keep your minds off of typing you lame losers.

#37 by ashley on February 21, 2007 - 10:38 am

i use to type only 50 to 60 words a minute i want to increse my typing speed send me some usefull tips.
#42 by some guy on September 9, 2007 - 6:15 pm
89.48 wpm, with three mistakes, on my first shot, and touch typing properly.
It is only the first shot that counts, because the text doesn’t change – you can just learn and practice the text! So of course your subsequent shots are going to get faster…
You can get faster if you have the correct finger positions (obviously), but also if you hit the keys lightly. It’s easier to go faster on a laptop, because of the lower action required. This is analogous the action required for guitar – fast shred guitarists use low fret action, because it allows them to sweep pick to perform other speed techniques easier.

Its not easy to keep on typing everyday, its become really boaring after few hours. but if you want to increase your typing speed then you have to face the pain for such a long time.
if you want yourself among thousend best typest’s then it will take atleast few years of boaring practic and lot of time.
some time your fingers will start burning they will cry to leave them but you have to be cruel dont let them rest any how keep typing
Thanks
