Today is my last day at Google.
I’ve been at Google for six years but it feels more like “Two years at Google and four years in a small start up called Android that plans to revolutionize the mobile industry”. I don’t know what’s the most surprising: how ambitious that goal was four years ago or how far Android has come today.
It’s hard to believe that Android shipped its first device about a year and a half ago and at that time, Apple had already sold more than ten million iPhones. Who would have guessed that it would only take Android eighteen months to catch up and pass the iPhone in market share?
In this short period of time, we’ve gone through four major releases (and many, many minor ones, some of which you probably never even heard of), and each new version has been a major milestone that got everyone on the team incredibly excited.
FroYo is no exception, prepare to be blown away by what you will see very soon.
Leaving Google is by far the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, but I feel that the time has come for me to move on to new challenges.
And for those of you wondering where I’m going, I accepted a job at LinkedIn. As you can see, I’m not going very far (LinkedIn is literally next door to Google) and I’m certainly planning to keep blogging, tweeting and buzzing.
Journey onward!

Hmm… with some important innovators leaving Google (you, Erick Tseng), it makes some of us wonder what’s going on over there. Someone needs to talk to a reporter anonymously/off-the-record… not sayin’, jus’ sayin’…

Well, as a brand new Android convert (HTC Incredible), I’m selfishly happy to see you going to LinkedIn (which I use daily)… might this signal a robust LinkedIn app for Android? Something that ties in as easily as Facebook with the contact book?
In any case, good luck and enjoy!

Why are you (and Erick) leaving??? What’s going on at Google? Are people on the team not liking what’s going on with Android??

Good luck at LinkedIn, can’t wait to see the Android app when it comes! Haha 😉

Yes I too wish you good luck. Like everybody else, I wonder why are you leaving, but I understand that you may not want to tell. Can you just tell if it’s personal (e.g. salary, vacation time, seeking nicer coworkers) or professional reason?
I mean, change is good, LinkedIn is fine, but Android is awesome, and used by millions (and soon by billions!)
I’ll be everybody who knows java would work on it for free, if it wasn’t for the need to feed the family and pay the bills!
Thus, we wonder…. 🙂
Good Luck!!

What is it about the Googleites that they have to constantly and incessantly compare themselves to Apple? It makes you sound foolish. Maybe its because none of the big brains at Google know the first thing about UI’s. or that the nexus One was a flop. Or that they make their money from buying and selling users personal information without their permission or knowledge. They just can’t seem to mention Android without bringing up the iPhone. Sad.

Its because Apple employs artists that are more like “architects” with a holistic approach..
google employs engineers…its two completely different mindset
And the engineers are in charge at google, the artists are at apple.
Its not enough to build a bridge, you have to know where it should lead to..
